Art for All
I recently watched the BLACKPINK documentary on Netflix and it brought me somewhere deep. 🎥 💗 Something the group talked about is how excited they were that people around the world loved their music, knew the lyrics to their songs. 🎶 And it made me think about how music created by Asian artists isn’t just for Asian people.
Like obvi, if you are a creator who is Asian, you will resonate with people who are also Asian. But that’s not where the story ends. At least that’s not where it *should* end. 🙅🏻♀️📚 It made me think about my tarot deck and how so many people told me the Asian American market was too small and they simply could not understand how non-Asian people would be able to enjoy it too. 🔮
As if they couldn’t wrap their head around the fact that the majority of tarot decks out there have white people in mind…and non-white people still use them. So why couldn’t the same be true for the reverse? 🤔
Art is for anyone to enjoy. 👩🏻🎨 It’s racism and bias and the white gaze that gets in the way. Here’s to expanding our views on what’s possible. 🤯👀
Say it with me: I am ALWAYS expanding. 🙆🏻♀️
Expansion is Hard
Speaking of expanding our views, I’ve been in a major expansion phase recently and lemme tell you, it’s kicking me in the ass.😓
Case in point: here’s a recent text I sent to my agent when I felt super out of my comfort zone and s.t.r.e.t.c.h.e.d on a project. 🤸🏻♀️📱
Sheesh, is doing new things hard or what?! 💆🏻♀️ The silver lining for me these days is that I get to work with people who I can be real with 👩🏻💻💞 Because damn was it exhausting to try to fake it til I made it lol.
Just HAD to Share!
Y’all I can’t even begin with this documentary…it is a MUST SEE. 👀 I was blown away to learn about the influence of Duke Kahanamoku on so much of our culture and moved to tears by his kindness and Hawaiian pride. 🌺
Immense gratitude for all he did to pave the way for brown people in America 🏄🏽♂️ ❣️
Cheering you on, we’re expanding the collective consciousness one day at a time. But don’t forget to rest along the way. Love you, you’re really doing it. 💪🏼💓

Elizabeth
