Word of the Week: Mental Health
Life Lesson:
Seven years later, therapy continues to be the highlight of my week. It’s not always fun, obviously, but it’s an investment in myself, my growth and my wellbeing—plus, it makes me feel really good. Besides, our parents, partner and friends should not be our therapist. That’s not their job, and they aren’t trained to do it. Life becomes a lot easier when you stop relying on external forces to make you happy and start learning how to cultivate happiness from within.
As someone who is sensitive and feels a lot of emotions, I’ve been shamed my whole life for this—from parents who told me not to take things so personally, to bosses who told me to develop a thicker skin, to a partner who has said, “Crying doesn’t help anything.” It’s been a big part of my self-love journey to love myself exactly as I am and not to judge my emotions. And although It’s not always a good use of energy to defend yourself, if you find yourself needing to respond, here are some of my go-tos lately:
- I like my thin skin.
- I have big feelings—it’s just who I am.
- We all process pain differently.
- I love every part of me, and I hope you can too.
- I can’t help that I’m upset right now.
Ask Yourself: What are my beliefs surrounding therapy?
Weekly Mantra: I am strong, even with thin skin.
