Tarot cards have been around for centuries, offering deep wisdom and guidance for many people. However, let’s take a moment to acknowledge: so many traditional tarot decks are stuck in the past and do not properly represent women in tarot. The court cards? Full of Kings, Queens, Knights, and Pages, basically all patriarchal figures telling you what to do in a semi-threatening way. The messages? Commonly rooted in making you feel small or not accepted if you don’t fit a certain narrative that the deck is presenting. There are many decks out there that are rooted in outdated gender roles. Oftentimes, the cards and illustrations do not center women or themes of inclusion. This was one of the many reasons I felt inspired to create a deck designed and focused on women, with a heavy dose of empowerment, adventure, and all-around good energy. My goal was to ensure that the tarot card meanings represent women, diversity, and my Asian heritage, while also encouraging you to find your own spiritual path.

In order to use The Adventure Tarot to its fullest, I want to walk you through the intentional changes that I made to the cards while creating them. I also want to show you how women shine through in this deck, and how you can relate to them on the ultimate adventure. 🗺️

Why We Need Female Tarot Archetypes 

Tarot has been around forever, but its characters and archetypes haven’t always kept up with the times. The traditional imagery often leans on outdated and limiting views of women, which don’t really capture the full range of strength, complexity, and growth that women experience today. For a lot of us, some tarot decks don’t feel relatable or empowering. 

By introducing new female archetypes and refreshing some of the characters, we’re creating a much more inclusive and relevant experience. These updated cards are all about making women feel seen in ways that are real, fun, and uplifting. Instead of being boxed into old stereotypes, we now have archetypes that reflect who we really are, dynamic, multifaceted, and always evolving. 

This shift is all about embracing a more expansive and vibrant view of femininity, one that encourages self-discovery, growth, and the confidence to stand tall in our own strength. It’s about giving women the freedom to connect with the cards in a way that sparks empowerment and personal transformation. These updated tarot archetypes help us tap into our truest potential and make the journey feel more personal, exciting, and meaningful. Meet Your New Court Cards

If you’ve ever pulled the King of Cups or Queen of Swords and felt a little… meh about it, you’re not alone. Those old archetypes don’t always feel relatable, especially when they’re built on outdated gender roles and power dynamics. You may have had a tarot reading that left you feeling intimidated as opposed to empowered. That’s why I flipped the script on the court cards in The Adventure Tarot. Instead of rigid, “this is how life should be” figures, I brought in characters who are on the same level as you. This enables you to use tarot for personal growth, instead of as a way to instill societal norms that exclude and deny your power. These cards are made to be equals who can join you on your journey and to help you carve your own path.

Here’s a breakdown of the updated tarot card meanings.

• The Scout (The Page): The vibe of this card is a carefree high schooler. She’s the newbie, the curious soul who’s just starting her adventure. She’s all about exploration, open to new experiences, and totally ready to learn. She’s the one reminding you that it’s okay to be a beginner and that curiosity is actually your superpower!
• The Backpacker (The Knight): The vibe of this card is the sassy teen. She is out there living her best life, figuring things out by doing. She’s exploring, learning from the world around her, and building the confidence that comes from hands-on experience. She’s all about adventure and the thrill of discovering what’s out there.
• The Explorer (The Queen): The vibe of this card is the college senior. She’s found her rhythm and is starting to understand the lay of the land and how she fits into it. She’s the perfect balance of confidence and flow, navigating life with a little more ease and wisdom.
• The Guide (The King): The vibe of this card is a woman in her mature thirties. The wise one who’s been there, done that, and is now ready to walk alongside you. But here’s the twist, she’s not above you. She’s been through the journey and is offering wisdom as an equal, not a ruler. Think of her as your personal life coach who’s been through the trenches and now wants to see you thrive.

Instead of feeling like you’re being told what to do by some high-and-mighty figure, you’re getting guidance from people who are in the trenches with you. The cards are written and illustrated to be peers who understand the struggle, the growth, and the excitement that comes with living your truth. These positive tarot card meanings give you the opportunity to form your own conclusions and connect with your inner self on a deeper level. Let’s revisit our earlier discussion about traditional tarot cards. There are cards such as The Hanged Man that feel truly uncomfortable and yucky to me. The imagery and meaning don’t align with the vibe I wanted to create in this deck. I knew that we needed to change this card and make it more relatable and positive. Enter The Acrobat! 

A reimagined card that is an adorable, lighthearted character with a fun, intuitive energy. She’s rocking her adventure with balance, grace, and a whole lot of strength. It’s a much more comforting meaning and illustration. The Acrobat is showing you that sometimes, it’s not about being stuck, it’s about surrendering to the moment and finding freedom in the pause. ✨ 

These positive tarot adaptations are here to enhance your experience with the cards and give you more power to chart your own adventure. This deck further illustrates women’s empowerment through tarot and provides you with personal growth and positivity in every read. A New Take On Reversals

When creating this deck, I made the conscious decision to switch out reversals with a releasing emotion. By removing the concept of reversals, I felt like this gave people more freedom to be less rigid and more intuitive during their readings. It’s also just easier (because you don’t have to memorize or get complicated with your reading!) Rather than getting bogged down by a card’s potential to appear upside down or misinterpreted, each card now focuses on something you’re  “Releasing” and that’s the extent of it.

This shift encourages a more open, free-flowing reading process that invites reflection without the weight of guilt or shame. It creates a gentler, more accessible experience, making it perfect for beginners or anyone seeking an easy to use tarot deck. The releasing moment gives you a chance to reflect, connect with your intuition, and let go of the things that may not be serving you. It makes the reading more simple and more in tune with the most important spiritual guide: yourself.
